The onset of the Eurozone crisis popularised the PIGS acronym. This paper investigates the historic formation of this country group heuristic by applying a structural topic model analysis (STM) to all 2,443 articles that mention Spain published in Die Zeit between 1946 and 2009. STM permits the authors to distinguish, characterise and quantify the cultural, political and economic dimensions of the way Spain was portrayed in this newspaper in the fifty years leading up to the Eurozone crisis.
